The city of Aktau, recently declared the cultural capital of the Turkic world for 2025, will host the first "URKER" International Film Festival of Animated Short Films from August 5 to 8. The festival aims to spotlight animated works inspired by Turkic mythology and honor the legacy of renowned Kazakh mythologist Serikbol Kondybay.
Organized by the Ministry of Culture and Information of Kazakhstan and the Mangistau Regional Akimat, the event will feature competitive and non-competitive programs. Awards include Best Short Film, Best Student Work, Best National Film, and a special prize from TÜRKSOY.
Filmmakers from Turkic-speaking countries are invited to submit short animated films (up to 3 minutes) based on Turkic myths by June 30, 2024. Participation is free, and selected filmmakers will have their travel and accommodation expenses covered.
The 2025 theme, "Animation of the New Turkic Time," encourages creators to reinterpret ancient myths through a modern lens. Alongside screenings, the festival will feature retrospectives, workshops, and masterclasses.
